What Just Happened?

When speaking to a toddler, there's a lot of playback. If Penelope said a word, we would acknowledge her speech by repeating it. For example, if she were to say "airplane" we would say something like, "yes, there is an airplane in the sky, it makes a loud noise". Lately she uses that playback to her advantage.

Scene: Dinner is done and Penelope is "all done".
Derek is wiping her hands and Emily is putting dishes into the sink

Pen: Nana, banana, banana
Derek and Emily: banana?
Pen: Ok (sure I'll have one, thank you)

Penelope sits up and waits for her banana.

She totally tricked us into offering her a banana! How did that happen?

Penelope loves being carried. "Carry you"! I can usually get away with telling her my arms are tired and she has to walk. So one day, Derek, Penelope, and I were out for a walk.

Scene: Derek is holding Penelope's bike and helmet. Penelope is getting frustrated with walking.

Penelope : Mommy, carry you!
Emily: Penelope you will just have to walk. My arms are tired.
Penelope: Mommy carry bike.
Emily: Ok (takes the bike and helmet from Derek)
Penelope: Daddy, carry you!
