New Kid In The Class

January 24th was Penelope's first day of preschool. She was very excited to attend. I couldn't read how she felt about it after her first class. Miss Kelly said she did great, but she definitely has a stubborn streak. Don't I know it! Best part of her going to preschool for me was when it was time to pick her up, she ran into my arms.

Speed Demon

Penelope is finally gliding and really going the distance on her bike. It's almost a little hard for me to catch up to her when she gets going. I'm terribly proud. It's really neat to see her progress on a bike. She gains just a little speed and she picks up her feet to glide. She laughs while she does it. It's really cute. When she is running out of steam, she pulls a branch from a nearby plant and fills up on gas. There's also a lot of "zoom zoom", "try to catch me", and just plain excitement.

Brace yourselves! This is what we woke up to. Why is THIS storm such a big deal? Still, I'll take it. What a lovely day.

I would like to mention the layers she had on. She had thermo underwear, long sleeve shirt, vest, scarf, jacket, baby legs, jeans, mittens with pocket warmers in each mitten, socks, and boots rated to -30 degrees. Oh, a hat. She's toasty.

Happy Birthday Penelope! We did not throw a party, but we did our best to give Penelope a fun day. Derek made her blueberry pancakes for breakfast. She made balloon people, had balloon races, rode her bike in the snow, made slime, and had lunch before her nap. After nap, we surprised her with a dozen helium filled balloons. That was a big hit! She opened presents, had cake and skyped with her family and friends. We ended the evening with a confetti popper.

Ski Trip

This was Penelope's first time skiing. She did great! She was pretty comfortable balancing on the skis, but when it came to moving fast, she didn't like it. She woke up really early, so by the time she had her lesson, she was cranky and ready for a nap.

After her nap, she was excited to go back up on the slopes and try again. She was doing really well, until a snow boarder crashed into her. Ah well, she got back up again anyway. She's a trooper!

I can't tell you how amazing our stay was up at Crystal Mountain. The views were amazing! Here's a picture of my skiers and Mount Rainer.

We had to squeeze in a little hike before we went home. This trail was beautiful. There was snow dusted moss everywhere and the forest just seemed so bright because of the snow. For some reason Penelope hikes way faster in the snow. Here I am trying to catch up with her.

I was opening a bottle of sparkling water and the fizz sound came out. We all know the sound. Penelope laughed and said "mommy pooped in her pants". Already, farting sounds are funny to her. Farts and such must be innately funny.

On a different note, Penelope has been hanging out in her room before falling asleep for the night. When we think she's quietly sleeping, she's actually taking her pajamas off and changing into a new outfit for the next day, or finding a toy for Ein. Around 3 in the morning, I turned to lie on my back and found Penelope sleeping between me and Derek. She's a restless sleeper and managed to be perpendicular to us, shoving both of us to the edge of the bed.

Penelope makes us laugh. She also makes us really tired in the mornings.

Past couple of weeks, Penelope has been climbing out of her crib. She'll leave her room and run to the potty. She seems to know that's the only acceptable reason to get out of her crib. She does this even if she had already gone potty minutes ago. For safety and other reasons we got her a twin bed. Today was the first day. She was extremely excited. Couple minutes later I heard something in her room. She had climbed back into her crib and said she doesn't want to sleep in the big girl bed. Sigh.

As soon as Penelope was up from her nap she was ready to go trick or treating. She had gone to three places, Derek's work, downtown Ballard, and the neighborhood of her friend Natalie. She LOVED trick or treating. She only ate one candy today; chocolate, of course.

The end of September was a lot of fun for us and for Penelope. Summer celebrated her birthday here in Seattle, which brought Adam, Jennie, and Willy out too. Penelope had a blast playingwith and being entertained by them. We then left for California to see more friends. We were in Sacramento visiting Erin and Anthony, in Modesto visiting Chieu and Lisa, and in Sunnyvale visiting Poonam, Nikhil, Evelyn, Jennie, Chris, Annika, and Declan. We are so lucky to have such great friends in our lives.

I've read somewhere how blogging helps a parent stay positive. It's true, I tend to leave the really frustrating and agonozing times out of the blog and I'm left with the beautiful and great moments with Penelope. I'm going to vent a little today. So if you hate to hear me whine like my child, just enjoy the picture and ignore the rest of my coments.

My child doesn't enjoy eating. When she eats, she eats very little, not enough to sustain her till the next meal or snack. What do we all feel like when we are tired and hungry? Multiply that by a two year old and you've got Penelope! I feel like I'm trying to control a tornado. By the end of the day, I'm a house that has been lifted off its foundation and trashed to tiny pieces. She's so wonderful to other people, but how am I already "mom"(the enemy)?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

Thanks to Penelope's Poh Poh, Derek and I were able to see a movie together! Not just any movie, Harry Potter! Actually, we saw very little of Penelope that day. We were gone five hours in the morning doing a Warrior Dash and she had a very long nap. We pretty much only saw her for three hours that day. It did not bother her at all that we were gone. This day was a treat for us parents, but we definitely missed our Pen.

Day 3 (last day!) of potty training. She went potty 11 times. One of them was poop! Whew! She had only one accident and it was outside. Ok, so you may be wondering what's with the Take That picture. Over the phone, the nurse left me with a dreadful option to help her poop. I've seen the signs, she needs to poop but refuses to go in the potty. I'm desperate! I finally bribed her. We told her she could watch Take That on the DVD player if she sits on the potty and tries to poop. Wow, that worked like magic! She sat down and pooped! She got to watch Take That do their circus thing on the potty. Ok, so this might be too much pooping info, but it's a really big deal in this house!

Day 2

On day 2 of potty training Penelope has gone 8 times. Unfortunately, she still hasn't done the #2. Oh well, I'm just happy there hasn't been any accidents. Hooray!

There are many ways to potty train. Penelope has been having potty time for the past two or three months. I don't remember. After her snacks and meals, she'll have potty time; where she sits on the potty and I read her an endless number of books. She had gotten to the point where she would just go pee as soon as she sat on the potty. If you were wondering how long I'm going to update the blog about her potty training, no worries, just three days. We are using Fellom's technique. So if anyone visits us in the next three months, you'll be seeing a lot of Pen's bare bottom.

It's our first day of potty training! Penelope has done really well for her first day. No accidents. She did go potty 13 times today. Does this mean where we go is dictated by how long Pen can go between potties?

When speaking to a toddler, there's a lot of playback. If Penelope said a word, we would acknowledge her speech by repeating it. For example, if she were to say "airplane" we would say something like, "yes, there is an airplane in the sky, it makes a loud noise". Lately she uses that playback to her advantage.

Scene: Dinner is done and Penelope is "all done".

Penelope loves being carried. "Carry you"! I can usually get away with telling her my arms are tired and she has to walk. So one day, Derek, Penelope, and I were out for a walk.

Merry Christmas! Penelope enjoyed her first Christmas Eve Mass this year. The next morning we enjoyed watching her open presents!

The day after Christmas we hit the slopes for some sledding. It was my first time too! We had a great time.

We went down to Portland for a couple days to eat.

A Fist Full of Sand

Aloha! We just returned from our trip to Hawaii, where we celebrated the marriage of Chieu and Lisa and enjoyed, what most people call, paradise. With the help of Garfield DVDs and iPod apps, Penelope slightly tolerated the long plane rides. As most people know, I am not a big fan of heat and sand, but seeing how much fun Derek and Pen were having, their glee rubbed off on me. It also helped that Pen didn't like to hang out at the beach long enough for me to go crazy. Some highlights of the trip include: toddler's wading pool, Ko Olina Lagoons, Moana Surfrider's really strong Mai Tai's, Leonard's Malasadas, Chieu and Lisa's BBQ and Wedding, Diamond Head Crater, Pearl Harbor, Shark's Cove, Matsumoto's Shaved Ice, H-3 (a beautiful freeway), Maunawili Falls Hike, Poke, Pali Lookout, Plate Lunches, and Penelope sleeping in till 6:30am!

No Walnuts Please

She's allergic to walnuts. The bakery section of Whole Foods was sampling Baklava. Ingredients for this yummy pastry are walnuts, filo dough, honey, olive oil, lemon juice, and cinnamon. Penelope seemed to like it and ate the whole sample. Couple seconds later, she spit it up, cried, and tried to wipe her tongue with the back of her hand. Redness and bumps started to appear around her mouth. The area looked like it is swelling. Even the back of her hand she used to wipe her tongue turned red and bumpy. Poor baby. With a little time, it all went away.

Derek took a trip out to New Mexico to see his family for the long weekend. To distract from missing him, we kept ourselves busy. Right after we dropped him off at the airport, we met up with Lyla, Amy, Jeff, Steve, and Cindy to the Evergreen State Fair. Pen loved petting chickens, riding on tractors, and sitting on Lyla's lap.

On Sunday, after Church, we tried to get the most awesomest almond croissant at Cafe Besalu, but it was closed for labor day weekend. So we settled for the best honey whole wheat roll I've ever had next door. Oh, and Pen had to settle for a cinnamon roll. I typed in google, "what to do with a toddler in Seattle". One of the things listed was a scratch patch. Never heard of it, but it was worth giving it a try. It was like playing with sand, but with pretty rocks! As you can see, she loved it.

We needed a break. We went to our neighborhood ice cream truck and got ourselves butter toffee crunch in a cone.

Monday, we started at the locks and took a run. Well, I took a run and Pen went to sleep. She woke up to a fresh cinnamon and sugar toast at Nellies. Seattle recently opened their light rail transit. It really just runs from downtown to Sea Tac airport with some stops along the way. Still, it would be Pen's first rail ride! Our destination? We went from Westlake Center to Beacon Hill Station. There's art work at every stop, but Beacon Hill was the most interesting. Penelope loved watching the trains go by. She kept saying "more". I want more lines!

Since we returned from our trip, Penelope has refused to nap in her crib. Today was the same; she screamed and cried when I put her down in her crib. I was IMing with Derek telling him how much she was screaming when I heard something weird. It sounded like someone was breaking into our place. I ran to the front door, it was closed, Pen was still crying. I opened her door and there she was standing on the FLOOR trying to climb onto her futon. She climbed out of her crib!

We flew to Albuquerque, NM for family and Penelope's aunt Kristina's graduation. She was great on the plane trips. She napped both ways! It was awesome. Actually, amazing! It was a wonderful trip. Penelope attended a party, went to the zoo, took nice morning walks, and played around with her elders.

15 months

Recently, I took a solo trip to Washington DC to visit our friends Summer and Adam. Derek and Penelope stayed behind. This was the first time I was apart from Penelope. It was hard, but Skype, and the company of good friends made it easier. In DC I got to do the things I no longer can do with a baby; linger at a restaurant, have a drink at a bar, walk outside when it's dark, go to an evening baseball game, etc. Yet, all the things I can't do anymore do not compare to all the wonderful things I can see and do with Penelope. We know how to kick it. She's amazing. It's good to be home.

Saturday morning, we went to an egg hunt at the zoo. It was very cold. Penelope couldn't move, she just shivered. We quickly left and did an egg hunt at home. She found her eggs, placed them in the basket and promptly removed them to do it again.

Sunday, we went to Easter Mass. She learned the word "light". There were many lights at the church and she let everyone around her know it. It was very cute. Happy Easter everyone!

Penelope can hold a cup with two hands and place the edge onto her lips. We usually help her tilt the cup so she can drink out of it. Tonight she took the cup in her hands and just dumped the milk all over her face. Snort, whaaaaa! Wipe, whaaaa! Her shirt was soaked. She got one sleeve off and we took care of the rest. She still wanted more milk! Whaaaaaat? Ok? To be safe, we allowed her to drink milk through a straw.
